Cross country skiing emerged from a need to travel over snow covered terrain and by the end of the 19th century, it developed as a sport.

For many centuries in the snow-covered North, skis were required to chase game and gather firewood during winter time. Having a long distance between the small, isolated communities, skiing also became important as means of keeping in social contact.

Skiing emerged in various different forms depending on region to region. One type had a horizontal toe-piece binding whereas the modern ski bindings are based on the Fennoscandian model of the 19th century. The East Siberian type was a thin board with a vertical four-hole binding and sometimes covered with fur. The Lapps used a horizontal stem-hole binding.

Present-day cross country skis were developed from the type used by the Lapps.Ski tours takes place both off-piste and also outside of ski resorts. These tours sometimes extend over multiple days. Typically, skis, bindings, and boots allow for free movement of the heel to enable a walking pace, as with Nordic disciplines and unlike Alpine skiing. Apart from being an adventurous sport, it also has lot of health benefits. It is regarded as the ultimate cardio exercise, the number one calorie burner, provides a sensational endorphin high, and much more.  Cross country skiing can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, and at the same time can be purely recreational or highly aggressive and competitive.
